Built By WordPress.com
Between 2022 and 2026, I designed and helped launch more than a thousand websites for Automattic’s Built By Express—a do-it-for-me (DIFM) service with a bold promise: hand us your idea, and in four business days you’ll have a site. Customers arrived with a paragraph, a logo, sometimes just a name and some keywords, and my job was to turn that into something polished, personal, and ready for the world—often at 90% or better customer satisfaction.
Below is a selection of those builds as they were delivered; the live sites belong to their owners now, and have grown and changed in ways organic websites should. What kept it inspiring was who the sites were for—authors finding a voice, artists a stage, entrepreneurs a storefront, small businesses a home on the web. But if I had to pick a favourite build, it would have to be Vegan Bunny Elle for the recipes alone.
Beybox
Beybox.ca is a collection tracker and deck builder for Beyblade X, the spinning-top game I picked up after buying a starter set for my son. Each top is assembled from three parts, the combinations run close to a hundred thousand, and competitive play follows the World Beyblade Organization ruleset, which forbids repeating a part across a deck of three. My collection grew past the point where I could track it, so I built something better than the spreadsheet I had planned.
I designed it first, working with Claude to think through the screens, the rules and the data—a full interactive mockup that told me which screens mattered and which to cut. The app itself was built with Bolt.new, an AI builder you direct in plain language: it set up the sign-in, built the database that keeps each collection its owner’s own, and loaded in the 146-part catalogue I’d gathered and double-checked against the community’s own references. My job was less writing code than checking the work—trying every screen, breaking things on purpose, making sure it matched the design. It’s deliberately a prototype, covering the two main product lines (BX/UX) and stopping there; new parts release every month, and an app that already knows what you own could one day tell you what to build tonight and what’s worth buying next.

Some of my favourite work has come from the people who hired Ruzek Design directly: a shop that needed a storefront, an artist who needed a stage, a non-profit that needed to explain itself clearly to the community it serves. Businesses, non-profits, government, and the arts, across southern Alberta and beyond. Some of the organisations I’ve had the pleasure of working with:
